gross returnor about $27,500 per amuASS „

How the distance

is 89 miles and the coal bill alone per day would be about

$70 and assuming 310 days the expense on this account alone

would be $21,000.

Running Staff, Rapairs to and Wear and

Tear of Stock would be considerably over $7,500 so that

even under the mot favourable conditions it would not pay

us to ask for Ruming Powers over the Chinese Bection. But

as it would be unlikely that the Chinese would agree to

working the whole of the traffic to Hongkong which we must

adsit would be not ever profitable to them, seeing that

their trains might be more profitable employed in working

their Local traffic, it would be as well to lay down that

the number of trains run through from Canton to Hongkong

and back should be as per the actual mileage of the two

Sections that is in the proportion of 1 to 4 and the Brit-

ish Section would than either have to make up its mind

to bear the loss of the rumning ovar the Chinese Section

or lay down that they would run their trains to the Junc-

tion at the agreed rate and after allow their stock to be

[ run over the Chinese Section at a hire which would be

$6 per bogie andƒ3 per unit vehicle for the trip one way.

To sum up provided the Chinese did their utmost to **

carry the Canton
